Edison International actions to address the risks of potential global warming

  • Edison International and its subsidiaries, Southern California Edison (SCE) and Edison Mission Group (EMG), have been leaders in reducing emissions through the development of clean generation technologies and investments in energy efficiency.
  • EMG is among the largest wind developers in the country, with 1,185 megawatts of wind capacity in operation in nine states and another 390 megawatts under construction in two states. The company also has a development pipeline of potential wind projects with an estimated installed capacity of approximately 5,000 megawatts.
  • SCE CO2 emissions are less today than they were in 1990 principally by working with state regulators to promote end-use energy efficiency and by expanding its renewable energy generation portfolio.
  • SCE is the nation’s leading purchaser of renewable energy. In 2008, SCE delivered 12.6 billion kilowatt-hours of renewable energy – 16 percent of its total power deliveries under California’s Renewable Portfolio Standard guidelines.
  • SCE currently purchases and provides its customers 65% of the total solar generated electricity in the U.S. SCE has contracted with Stirling Solar for up to 850 megawatts of solar power in the California desert that will demonstrate the feasibility of large-scale production of electricity from the sun.
  • SCE is recognized by EPA, DOE and environmental organizations as the nation’s leader in energy efficiency. For the period of 2004-2008, SCE produced more energy-efficiency resources and economic and environmental benefits for its customers than any utility in the country. During the past five years, SCE's energy-efficiency programs have saved 5.6 billion kilowatt-hours – enough energy to power 789,000 homes for an entire year.
  • EMG is the eighth largest owner of wind energy in the country. We now have 1,185 megawatts of operating wind projects in nine states and expect to have about 2,000 MW of operating wind projects by the end of 2011.
  • SCE operates one of the world’s largest fleets of electric vehicles. SCE’s more than 300 electric vehicles have traveled more than 18 million miles, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 9,600 tons and pollutants by more than 2,200 tons.
  • Our advanced forestry management techniques at our hydroelectric facilities in the Sierra Nevada resulted in over 68,000 tons of CO2  being sequestered per year. SCE is planting 5,000 trees annually over the next decade in Great Park in Irvine, CA removing an estimated 2,500 tons of CO2  along with some 500,000 pounds of other pollutants from the air each year.
  • SCE is a member of the California Climate Action Reserve, a non-profit, voluntary membership organization established by state law to allow members to report and certify their greenhouse gas emissions. We reported annually to the Reserve and had third party certification of our greenhouse gas emissions from 2002 through 2008. SCE also participated in the DOE Climate Challenge Accord. In 2005 we reported more than 11 million tons of CO2 equivalent reductions from a variety of projects. Currently, SCE reports its GHG emissions to the California Air Resources Board and to The Climate Registry.
  • Edison International became a founding reporter to The Climate Registry in May 2008. The Climate Registry is a new multi-national organization, which allows organizations to voluntarily inventory, verify and publicly report their greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Under a partnership with the U.S. EPA, SCE has reduced its sulfurhexaflouride gas emissions, a potent greenhouse gas used for electrical insulation equipment, by about 60 percent from 1999 through 2007.
