Waste Management

Edison International and its subsidiaries during the course of operations generate solid, industrial, hazardous and other wastes, which include mineral oil, coal combustion ash and nuclear waste. Each facility is responsible for ensuring that all wastes are carefully managed, recyling wherever possible to minimize the amount generated.

Homer City Generating Station - Homer City, Penn.At Midwest Generation, a U.S. based subsidiary of Edison Mission Energy, we've enacted a successful recycling program to dispose of coal combustion byproducts (ccbs), particularly bottom and fly ash, in an environmentally friendly manner. In fact, almost all of the ccbs from our Illinois plants are eventually recycled into products such as roof shingles, cement and road de-icers, with very little making its way into local landfills.

All Edison International operating companies are dedicated to preventing and recycling wastes, as well as managing wastes according to strict regulatory guidelines. We also actively encourage our employees to think of new ways to reduce and reuse all wastes generated.

When it comes to garbage, we say "Waste Not!"

Waste Not is the name of our recycling program which started in 1993. It's a company-wide effort that focuses on waste prevention, green purchasing, reuse, and recycling.

What do we recycle?

Almost everything: paper, cardboard, glass, plastic metal, wood, tires, oil, toner cartridges, and wood products. Through the program, we prevent almost 87 percent of that material from ever reaching our overtaxed landfills.

In short, recycling, reusing, and diverting from landfills has become a way of life for us.
